Convento Capuchinas

The Convento Capuchinas features a circular tower known as the Torre del Retiro, with individual meditation cells arranged around a central fountain. This convent opened in seventeen thirty-six for nuns from Madrid who lived under strict vows of poverty and seclusion. During the earthquake of seventeen seventy-three, the building suffered severe structural damage, yet the ruins remained standing. The nuns eventually abandoned the site, leaving behind a complex that remains the best preserved example of eighteenth century monastic life in Antigua.
