The red and white painted facade of Higginbothams sits along the busy stretch of Mahatma Gandhi Road as the oldest bookstore in India. Abel Joshua Higginbotham, an English librarian, took over a bankrupt bookshop in eighteen forty-four and turned it into the primary literary hub for the city. When the Indian army marched back from World War Two, the soldiers famously headed here to buy books. The shelves hold decades of history, and the shop remains a quiet anchor in the city center.
