Government Museum

The Government Museum in Bengaluru is a sturdy, deep red building with thick masonry walls and a wide, columned veranda. Established in eighteen sixty-five, it ranks among the oldest museums in the country. Lieutenant Colonel Sankey, a military engineer, designed the structure to house a growing collection of geological and archaeological finds. Edward Balfour, a surgeon and naturalist, served as the first officer in charge, filling the glass cases with thousands of specimens that traveled across the state to reach these galleries.
