I Wayan Sukarta / Lagi

The two-story wooden structure in Sayan features intricate Balinese woodcarvings along the eaves and deep, wrap-around verandas. This is the workshop and home of I Wayan Sukarta, a master carver whose work maintains traditional techniques in a changing regional landscape. He chose this specific hillside spot to capture the constant airflow coming up from the river valley, which helps keep the wood stable while he works. Sukarta often spent weeks selecting a single piece of teak before making his first cut.
