The Pura Desa and Pura Puseh in Padangtegal feature tiered meru shrines with thick, black thatched roofs made of sugar palm fiber. These two temples sit side by side at the head of the village, serving as the spiritual center for the community. In the nineteen seventies, the local headman decided to replace the traditional brick gateways with elaborate carvings of mythical beasts. Artisans spent months chiseling the hard volcanic tuff, turning the temple entrance into a dense, stone forest of guardian figures.
