The old banyan tree in the center of the village spreads its tangled, hanging roots across a wide stone base, creating a tangle of wood that feels solid enough to hold up the sky. Villagers wrap black and white checkered cloths around its massive trunk, marking it as a residence for the spirits who protect this land. When the road needed widening decades ago, the engineers diverted the entire path around these roots rather than cut a single branch.
