The building stands out with a massive, cylindrical void cut through its center, creating an open-air atrium that draws a constant stream of sunlight and air down into the concrete core. Opened in nineteen ninety-three, Big Step brought a sharp, industrial aesthetic to an area known for more traditional shopping. The architect, Tadao Ando, designed the structure to accommodate youth culture, featuring a sunken plaza that hosted local punk bands and skateboarders throughout the nineties, turning the commercial space into a public stage.
