The Fudo Myo-o statue at Hozen-ji is covered in a thick, velvety layer of green moss. Visitors splash water onto the deity, a ritual meant to bring good fortune that has kept the stone damp for generations. The temple survived the air raids of nineteen forty-five that leveled most of Osaka, leaving this small, tucked-away space as the only structure that remained standing in the district. It sits today in the quiet dark, surrounded by the bright lights of Namba.
