Buddha’s Footprint Temple

The Wat Phra Phutthabat features a massive, stone-carved footprint of the Buddha embedded directly into a rock ledge. King Sourigna Vongsa commissioned the shrine in sixteen eighty-eight to protect this holy mark, which locals believed fell from the sky. Pilgrims traveled for weeks through dense jungle to press their foreheads against the cold stone, hoping for a blessing. During the rainy season, the surrounding river waters rise, leaving the temple perched alone above the flood, accessible only by a long wooden staircase.
