The outer walls of Wat Sensoukharam glow with an intense, gilded red, covered in intricate gold-leaf stencils of mythical creatures and floral patterns. It sits on the main street of Luang Prabang, built in seventeen eighteen by King Kitsarat using one hundred thousand stones gathered from the Mekong River. Locals believe the name refers to those one hundred thousand offerings, a massive investment of labor and faith intended to secure merit for the royal family and the city alike.
