Xieng Thong Dock

other

The Xieng Thong Dock features a set of broad stone stairs leading directly from the Mekong riverbank up to the ornate rear entrance of Wat Xieng Thong. During the era of the Lao monarchy, this dock served as the exclusive landing point for the king. When the monarch returned from travels or ceremonies in Vientiane, he disembarked here to be met by monks and high-ranking officials. The water level determines how many stone steps appear, rising and falling with the Mekong throughout the year.
