The Hospicio Cabañas features long, symmetrical neoclassical lines and a series of twenty-three interconnected courtyards that dominate the landscape. Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas y Crespo founded this site in eighteen oh five to house the city's orphans, the elderly, and the sick. The complex functioned as an asylum for over a century. Within the central chapel, artist José Clemente Orozco later painted fifty-seven frescos, including his famous Man of Fire, which covers the entire interior of the dome.
