Guadalajara's Cathedral

The twin yellow neo-Gothic spires of Guadalajara Cathedral rise above the city center, distinct for their prickly, jagged silhouette against the sky. While the base of the structure dates to the sixteenth century, those iconic towers are actually twentieth-century replacements. They were rebuilt after an earthquake in eighteen eighteen crumbled the originals, and again after a later tremor in nineteen fifty-seven. Architects settled on this imported European style, creating a sharp contrast with the heavy, rounded stonework of the older Spanish colonial facade.
