Teatro Degollado

The neoclassical facade of Teatro Degollado features a grand portico with sixteen Corinthian columns supporting a triangular pediment. Inside, the ceiling mural depicts a scene from Dante’s Divine Comedy. During the construction in the eighteen fifties, the lead architect Jacobo Galvez insisted the roof remain unsupported by interior pillars to ensure a clear view of the stage. He eventually hung the massive ceiling fresco from the roof structure itself, a daring engineering gamble that remains the defining feature of the theater.
