Plaza de la Liberación

The Plaza de la Liberación stretches out as a vast stone rectangle between the cathedral and the Degollado Theater, marked by two large fountains shaped like bronze jars. It commemorates the moment in eighteen ten when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued his decree abolishing slavery in New Spain. Before the plaza existed, this space was occupied by houses and a small church that were demolished in the nineteen fifties to create an unobstructed view between the city’s major religious and cultural landmarks.
