The Parroquia El Expiatorio Eucarístico displays a jagged, neo-Gothic facade carved entirely from dark volcanic stone. Construction dragged on for seventy-five years, beginning in eighteen ninety-seven, because the architect, Adamo Boari, insisted on using traditional stonemasonry instead of modern steel. When the Mexican Revolution broke out in nineteen ten, work halted entirely, leaving the structure unfinished for decades. Eventually, a local engineer named Ignacio Díaz Morales took over the project in the nineteen forties, spending the rest of his life finishing the stone vaults.
