Edificio Basurto

The Edificio Basurto rises in a stark curve of white concrete, defined by the sweeping horizontal bands of its balconies that wrap around the corner of Avenida Veracruz. Architect Francisco Serrano built this apartment block in nineteen forty-five, intentionally breaking from the rigid right angles common in Mexico City at the time. When he finished, local critics argued the daring curves would make the interiors impossible to furnish, but the design quickly became a defining example of the city’s Art Deco transition.
