Noorderkerk

The Noorderkerk rises above the surrounding canal houses with a distinct floor plan shaped like a Greek cross. Built in the early seventeenth century, it served as a place of worship for the working-class residents of the Jordaan district. When the city held a massive protest against the German occupation here in nineteen forty-one, the church became a rallying point for those standing up against the deportation of Jewish neighbors. A bronze plaque near the entrance remembers those who gathered to strike.
