The Zuydervelt Hofje features a brick facade tucked behind a modest, arched stone entrance on the Zuidwal. Pieter van Zuydervelt founded this almshouse in sixteen forty-one to provide living quarters for elderly Protestant women. A carved stone tablet above the entrance displays the family crest, marking the site where those women spent their final years. Residents once received a small allowance and a supply of peat for their hearths, funded by the initial endowment that kept the residence operating for centuries.
