Chinatown Gate

The Chinatown Gate on Gedempte Burgwal features heavy, dark red columns topped with intricate, traditional Chinese roof tiles and gilded carvings. It arrived in two thousand and seven as a gift from The Hague’s sister city, Zhangjiagang. Local residents spent weeks meticulously assembling the pre-fabricated pieces shipped from China to ensure the craftsmanship remained precise. When the final tile was set, the gate became the formal threshold for the neighborhood, marking the transition into the vibrant heart of the local Chinese community.
