The Passage

The Passage in The Hague features a high, glass-covered roof that bridges the gap between the Spuistraat and the Buitenhof. Built in the eighteen eighties, it remains the oldest shopping arcade in the Netherlands. Its architect, Bernard Tschumi, designed it to mimic the grand shopping passages of Paris, complete with ornate facades and classical detailing. During the construction, workers uncovered the remains of an old nobleman's courtyard, which became a foundation for the structure that stands here today.
