Peace Palace

The Peace Palace wears a heavy coat of dark gray stone and sprouts steep, turreted roofs that suggest a medieval fortress rather than a modern courthouse. Andrew Carnegie funded this building in nineteen oh three to house the Permanent Court of Arbitration. He wanted a home for international law where nations could settle disputes without gunfire. During construction, the architect Louis Cordonnier received a telegram demanding he use his own bricks for the walls. He ignored the request, and the structure stayed standing.
