The bronze figure of Johan de Witt stands on a high pedestal in the Voorhout, clutching a quill in one hand and a stack of papers in the other. He served as the grand pensionary of Holland during the seventeenth century, effectively running the Dutch Republic for two decades. In sixteen seventy-two, an angry mob dragged him and his brother from the Gevangenpoort prison and killed them in the street. This statue marks the spot near where he spent his final, violent hours.
