Bazarstraat is defined by a row of low, white-plastered houses that stand out against the deeper red brick common in the rest of the neighborhood. These dwellings were built in the mid nineteenth century as modest workers' housing. In eighteen sixty-eight, a local builder named Jacobus van der Horst acquired the land to develop these homes for laborers. They occupy a quiet corner of the Zeeheldenkwartier, retaining a uniform, humble scale that persists despite the luxury renovations nearby.
