Prins Hendrikstraat 36

The brick facade at Prins Hendrikstraat thirty-six features a curved, stepped gable typical of the early twentieth century, but the blue tile work tucked into the entryway reveals its original purpose. Before it became a residence, this building housed a local bakery. In nineteen twenty-one, the baker, a man named Van der Spek, installed these tiles to withstand the flour dust and constant scrubbing. He baked rye bread here for three decades, long before the neighborhood shifted into its current mix of boutiques.
