The Regentenkamer Hofje van Nieuwkoop sits behind a heavy, arched stone gateway on the Prinsegracht, marked by a stone crest depicting a tree. This courtyard complex dates to sixteen sixty-one, built after the death of Johan van Nieuwkoop. He left his entire fortune to house needy older women. For three centuries, widows and single women lived in these small brick houses, keeping to a strict schedule of church attendance and evening curfews under the watchful eye of the men who managed the foundation.
