Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew

The Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and Saint Bartholomew features two separate churches stacked directly on top of each other. The lower church sits at ground level, while the upper church, accessible by a grand staircase, occupies the space above. Henryk the Fourth, the Duke of Wrocław, commissioned the building in twelve eighty-eight to serve as his own mausoleum. He placed his massive stone sarcophagus in the lower sanctuary, where his effigy still rests today, carved in stone and staring toward the altar.
