A small, round bronze figure sits on the pavement near the Świdnicka Street underpass, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and clutching a walking stick. This is Krasnal Papa, the first of the hundreds of tiny gnomes now scattered throughout Wrocław. He appeared in two thousand five to commemorate the Orange Alternative, an underground protest movement that used absurd humor to mock the communist regime. He marks the spot where activists once painted gnomes on walls to cover up police slogans and paint splatters.
