Small bronze figures cast in the shape of dwarves, or krasnale, populate the sidewalks and squares of Wrocław. Three of these tiny residents sit near the Oder riverbank. One gnome carefully launches miniature boats into the water, another tosses crumbs to the birds, and a third tends to a small garden. These figures appeared in two thousand five, inspired by the Orange Alternative movement, an underground anti-communist protest group that used absurdity and humor to challenge the authorities during the nineteen eighties.
