The Gyeongju Choe clan house sits behind a high stone wall, marked by a massive, weathered wooden gate that dates back centuries. For twelve generations, the head of this family managed their vast wealth under a strict set of household rules. They limited their land holdings and capped their annual rice production, refusing to expand their fortune at the expense of local tenant farmers. When a massive famine hit the region, the gates stayed open to feed the hungry from their private granaries.
