Hinterdorfstrasse 20

The dark, sun-bleached logs of Hinterdorfstrasse twenty form one of the oldest buildings in Zermatt. These larch wood beams were stacked in the sixteenth century, raised on flat stone discs to keep mice and rats from climbing into the grain stores above. While the rest of the village grew into a modern resort, this house kept its low, heavy roof and small, sparse windows. A local family named the Laubers built it to survive deep mountain winters and intense alpine winds.
