The Monte Rosa Hotel wears a facade of stone and timber that anchors the town square, distinguished by its intricate wooden balconies and the heavy, carved shutters framing every window. This building served as the base for Edward Whymper during his repeated attempts to climb the Matterhorn. When he finally reached the summit in eighteen sixty-five, he returned here to this very house to record the tragedy that occurred on the descent. It remains the oldest hotel in Zermatt.
