The Zermatters building sits near the town church, distinguished by a heavy wooden facade and the simple, bold lettering identifying it as the headquarters for the Zermatt mountain guides. This office serves as the base for the oldest and largest mountain guide association in Switzerland. In the nineteenth century, when mountaineering shifted from a daring pursuit for the elite to a local industry, these men formed a collective to standardize safety and protect their trade. They still occupy this space today.
