Christ Church Cathedral

The square stone tower of Christ Church Cathedral rises above the surrounding neighborhood, topped by a clock that famously refuses to keep accurate time. Built by the Universities Mission to Central Africa starting in eighteen seventy-three, the cathedral stands directly on the site of the former East African slave market. Bishop Edward Steere designed the structure using coral rag and lime, positioning the high altar over the exact spot where the market’s whipping post once stood.
