The Sultan's Palace, known locally as Beit el-Sahel, stands out with its three stories of whitewashed walls and castellated parapets overlooking the Indian Ocean. Built in the late nineteenth century for the Sultan of Zanzibar, it replaced an earlier wooden structure destroyed during the short Anglo-Zanzibar War of eighteen ninety-six. Princess Salme, who lived in the previous palace, once fled the island for Germany after a forbidden romance with a merchant, leaving behind a legacy that colors the building's history.
