A wide, curved archway of carved stone marks the primary entrance to the Darajani Bazaar. Constructed in nineteen oh four by Sultan Ali bin Hamud, the market serves as the commercial heart of Stone Town. Fresh produce, heaps of pungent spices, and slabs of local fish arrive here daily from across Zanzibar. Legend tells of the market being built on a site where a large creek once separated the island into two distinct districts, effectively linking the town together through trade.
