The Emerson on Hurumzi is a four-story stone building in the heart of Stone Town, distinguished by its intricate, hand-carved wooden balconies that overhang the narrow street. It began as the home of Tharia Topan, a wealthy nineteenth-century merchant who served as the principal advisor to the Sultan of Zanzibar. Topan imported master woodcarvers from India to embellish his residence, creating the complex lattice screens that filter the intense tropical light into the rooms inside.
