The Forodhani of Zanzibar

Forodhani Gardens sits right at the water edge, marked by a stone balustrade that separates the park from the Indian Ocean. During the day, it functions as a simple seaside promenade. Once the sun drops, the space fills with rows of charcoal grills and gas lanterns. Vendors prepare grilled seafood, sugarcane juice, and Zanzibar pizza for the crowds. In the nineteen nineties, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture rebuilt the entire park, replacing crumbling concrete with the geometric tiling seen today.
