Hamam Persian Baths

The Hamamni Persian Baths stand out because of the intricate, geometric carvings and the cluster of domes that break the rooftop silhouette of Stone Town. Built in the late nineteenth century for Sultan Barghash bin Said, the baths provided a public service for the city's residents. The Sultan hired architects from Shiraz, Iran, to design the structure. They installed an underground furnace to heat water, which was then piped through stone channels to various bathing rooms for the local population.
