Syria Passage bears a heavy, carved stone archway draped in dark, weathered ornamentation that separates it from the clean lines of the surrounding street. Built in nineteen oh eight by the Ottoman parliamentarian Hassan Hasib Pasha, it originally housed high-end shops and luxury apartments for the city’s elite. During the early twentieth century, the building served as a headquarters for the local tobacco trade, with merchants conducting business in the grand, high-ceilinged spaces while residents lived in the ornate chambers above.
