Taksim Square is defined by the Cumhuriyet Aniti, or Republic Monument, a cluster of bronze figures standing in a circular plaza. Henri Prost designed the surrounding layout in the nineteen thirties, but the square centers on this monument to the nineteen twenty-three founding of the Turkish Republic. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk appears twice, once in military uniform and once in civilian dress, surrounded by his comrades. He once climbed these steps to address a crowd, shaking the dust from his coat before speaking.
