Cihangir Mosque

The Cihangir Mosque sits on a steep ridge overlooking the Bosphorus, identified by a solitary, slender minaret that rises sharply against the skyline. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned this building in fifteen fifty-nine to honor his son, Prince Cihangir, who died young. The original wooden structure succumbed to repeated fires, leaving behind only the memory of its namesake. The current stone version dates to the nineteenth century, built by Sultan Abdulhamid the Second, and maintains the view that once captivated the grieving prince.
