Hagia Triada Greek Orthodox Church

The Hagia Triada Greek Orthodox Church is recognizable by its massive twin bell towers and a large central dome that looms over the corner of the street. Built in eighteen eighty, it was the first domed Christian church allowed to be constructed in Istanbul after the Ottoman conquest. Architect Porphyrios Valassakis designed the structure on the site of a former Greek cemetery. During the September pogrom of nineteen fifty-five, rioters set fire to the building, gutting the interior and damaging the roof.
