Chelsea Barracks bombing

On October 10, 1981, this site became the center of a targeted attack when a nail bomb hidden in a parked laundry van detonated. The explosion occurred at noon, timed specifically to strike a bus as it transported members of the Irish Guards back to their quarters after ceremonial duties. The blast killed two civilians who were passing by and injured forty people, including twenty-three soldiers. This event marked a violent escalation in a series of attacks across London during that period, directly following the conclusion of the Irish hunger strikes in Northern Ireland.
