Unicorn Theatre

The Unicorn Theatre began its life in 1947 not as a building, but as a roving enterprise. Its founder, Caryl Jenner, launched the project by touring the country in two ex-military trucks, determined to bring professional theater to children in isolated villages and towns that lacked any permanent playhouse. She observed young audiences during her early career as a pantomime writer, meticulously recording which scenes held their attention and which lost them. This field research shaped her founding philosophy that theater for children should meet the same high standards of writing, directing, and design as any major production for adults.
