You are standing near the former site of the Victoria Park Cemetery, which once occupied a troubled twelve acres of land in Bethnal Green. Established in eighteen forty-five by a private company, the cemetery became infamous for its rapid overcrowding and poor management. Within only a few years of opening, the site contained approximately one hundred thousand bodies, a staggering number that included a high proportion of children from the surrounding impoverished neighborhoods.
