Malplaquet House

Malplaquet House was built in seventeen forty-two and takes its name from the seventeen-oh-nine Battle of Malplaquet. While it is unclear exactly why the name was chosen, one theory links it to a widow who lived here and whose husband made his fortune selling war salvage from that era. For over a century, the building sat abandoned as a residence, transitioning into a series of commercial spaces, including small shops built directly onto its front garden. By the late twentieth century, the house was a dilapidated wreck buried behind these weathered shop fronts and was even slated for demolition before the Spitalfields Trust intervened to save it.
