The building you are approaching began its life in eighteen eighty-eight as a bustling Victorian fire station. After the fire brigade moved out in the late nineteen sixties, the structure fell into disrepair and sat derelict for years. In the mid-nineteen seventies, the local council gifted this fire-damaged shell to a group of Buddhists who moved in and began living among the rubble as they renovated it by hand. They officially opened the London Buddhist Centre in nineteen seventy-eight, transforming a space once designed for emergency response into a sanctuary for meditation and community life.
