You are standing near the former site of Saint Margaret’s Church, a medieval fixture that once defined the civic heart of this area. While no church building remains, the location on Borough High Street was once known as Saint Margaret’s Hill, marking the center of local government and public life. The church served as the primary place of worship for the local parish until its dissolution in fifteen forty-one. Following the closure, the building underwent a dramatic transformation and was repurposed as the Borough Compter, a local prison. This site later met its end during the Great Fire of Southwark in sixteen seventy-six. Today, a commemorative plaque marks the spot where the building once stood, preserving the memory of a site that bridged the gap between religious life and the gritty realities of civic justice.
