Carlyle Square

Carlyle Square was originally developed as Oakley Square in the eighteen thirties on land that had previously failed as a commercial mulberry garden. The land was intended to produce silk, but the venture never succeeded, leading the Cadogan Estate to clear away existing cottages and lay out a residential square instead. The square was eventually renamed in eighteen seventy-two to honor the Scottish historian and essayist Thomas Carlyle, who lived just a short walk away.
